During the first few days, the whole school focused on a poetry and art immersion project based on ‘Hope is the Thing with Feathers’ by Emily Dickenson. Children explored the idea of hope through birds, feathers, light and colour. They experimented with different tools and surfaces to create marks, exploring black, white, grey and brighter “hope” colours and discussed that light can emerge from darkness. The children enjoyed exploring, experimenting and making choices while completing their art and poetry pieces.
EYFS and Year 1&2 developed their drawing and painting skills through the theme of birds and feathers, while continuing to explore colour, contrast and emotion. These included Feather drawings or prints.
Years 3&4 developed their work using more detailed and realistic representations. They created drawing that used shading, tone and detail plus mixed painted techniques.
Years 5&6 developed more sophisticated outcomes, bringing together drawing, painting, typography and mixed media. They drew detailed feathers, some used words or phrases from the poem integrated into their artwork, others used Mixed-media backgrounds where they analysed and evaluated their own work.
